I'm a smoker but I also support execution. (Not for smokers, of course!)

If we abolished the NHS then people could do whatever they wished without anyone else having to pay to pick up the pieces. Then we could all have a good night's rest.

Well I suppose you would be able to sleep soundly if you have enough to pay for private treatment. But tell us what should be in the place of the NHS in your opinion. gus

In France it is illegal to smoke in a vegetable garden, a cowshed, a heterosexual brothel, a sewage works or on a motorcycle of over 500cc. There is a move to make this legislation Europewide. Most sensible too, if you think about it.

Is that true Alan? I always used to smoke in my veg garden. What a criminal. Should I give myself in?

Where, in France, did you live or cultivate. You cannot smoke in public in Belgium except in Brussels.

The Ariege. Corbieres. The Auvergne. Brittany. I lived in Paris once too, but didn't do much cultivating.

Smokers down here have to nipdown the road into basque country. They blacked out the no-smoking signs at the same time as the road direction signs. All in French they were! They tell me they got a special dispensation from Brussels saying they can smoke if they are wearing a red neckerchief as a warning.

I heard on Today yesterday that in China all public service workers - teachers, doctors, wotnot - have to buy a certain number of thousand cigarettes each year from their local shop, or they get heavily fined. Apparently they must do their patriotic duty in keeping the tax revenues up.

Compelled to buy, not to personally consume. They may pass them on as, 'payment in kind', to their servants, gardeners, accountants or other disposables. it is known as the 'Trickle Down' effect.
