Just after the Chernobyl disaster Cuba invited a large number of sick children from near the reactor for hospital treatment in Cuba and a good holiday with TLC. Incidentally, the Cuban doctors were surprised at the apparent absence of medical amenties, including dentists, in the Chernobyl area. In spite of the trade embargoes imposed on Cuba by the Americans they the Cubans seem to do some wonderful work in the medical field. T'is a pity Uncle Sam is determined that they don't succeed. gus

They're very good with the fisticuffs y'know.
Most of their gold medals seem to be gleaned from boxing.

Why did they constantly need funding and trade from the USSR? Could it be because they have a duff system? And how come the USA can manage without trading with Cuba? If you want to know about 'free' economies read and learn Gus. www.latinbusinesschronicle.com/app/article.aspx?id=754But I doubt your prejudices will change as a result. Compare Cuba with the rest of the Americas Gus. www.heritage.org/research/features/index/search.cfmEurope was interesting as well.

Good Lord sandy surely you know how difficult it is for a small country to survive alone without trading something. Even in our own fair isle we must do this to survive. The difference here is that a big bully is not stopping us doing it. gus

There is nothing to stop Cuba trading with its neighbours in central and South America Gus.
I doubt if Britain would suffer too much if we didn't trade with Germany, say.
Cuba is NOT a small country.
Republic of Cuba - Area: 110,860 sq km (42,803 sq miles)
Great Britain - Area 88,745 sq miles.
<<< The United States embargo against Cuba (described in Cuba as el bloqueo, Spanish for "the blockade") is an economic, commercial and financial embargo imposed on Cuba on February 7, 1962. It was codified into law in 1992 with the stated purpose of bringing democracy to the Cuban people, and in fact is entitled The Cuban Democracy Act. >>>
But I don't suppose democracy is much of a concern to a communist.

Sandy i have been giving this some serious thought and I have come to the conclusion that pure capitalism has the seed of its own destruction in it. The answer could be Chinese socialism as the winner in the future. gus

But the Chinese are embracing Capitalism more than any country, Gus.
Look at who is held responsible for the most carbon emissions - China.
Look at who is the least bothered about the Global welfare - China!

That can't be said of Communism, which would have fallen on it's arse after two years or so but for the persecution of the people. Chinese socialism is just another branch of capitalism Gus.

Sorry chaps but you are not right. What China is doing is taking advantage of the technology of the West no more no less. They will not give up their brand of socialist ideology, no matter if they are pulling the wool over the West's and it seems your eyes. I would recommend that the leadership in Cuba hangs on to the Chinese shirt tails

Wonderful. I can't wait to throw away our modern drugs and put my faith in Chinese medicine, Gus. Throw in a few snakes and shark fins and then we can all have a nice supper of Boiled Dog (er..they keep them in cages, Gus..so take your pick?).
