No you were not obliged to. I have looked studiously through the rule book and nowhere does it say that you have to insert the same letter where it appears elsewhere. Of course, my rule book is the 1978 Lethbridge version, so it may have been revised since the drastic fire gutted the Academy for Film Title games and rendered many of the old well-loved versions inaccessible, but that was a risk I presumptuously decided to take.
(In fact there were also two more e's as well.)
Erm now what can we do next?
