I can't see the sense in this. www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-13739876Sure everybody will agree that just because a woman dresses up like a slut and/or walks around on her own high on booze or other drugs she does not deserve to get raped but that doesn't mean that it is not more likely that she will get raped, does it? Just as any male idiot with money hanging out of his back pocket is more likely to have his money stolen. Or someone who can't be arsed to lock his doors or close his windows at night is not more likely to be burgled.

This seems to me to be another of those cases where people are polarised at either end of the spectrum.
You have some who think that it is ok for females to walk around half nekkid and others (like some Muslims) who think wimmins should be wrapped up and never seen at all.
Surely the most sensible opinion is somewhere between?

It IS a ridiculous thing.
Rape usually isn't about what a woman wears. Most rapes are carried out by people the woman knows and what type of clothes she's wearing doesn't come into it.
And rape isn't always about sex. It's about power.
What that Canadian man said was ludicrous, but I think what the women are objecting to is being told what they should or shouldn't wear.
You know, a bit like we object when some women are forced to wear the niqab (sp?)

I don't think it is a question of being told what to wear, it is more a question of 'do you think it is wise for a woman to go around wearing next to nothing at night'?
And the answer to that must surely be No.
Just as it is unwise not to lock your door at night or walk around the streets with money hanging out of your pants.
And that wisdom would not be affected one iota if most houses that are burgled have locked doors.

Apparently most women who get raped are wearing jeans. So women should not wear jeans?
People on those slut walks were wearing all sorts - including jeans and very conservative clothing. It is not about the freedom to dress like that bloke called a slut; it is about the freedom to wear anything and not get raped. Including jeans.

And just as anyone who chooses to go skiing is more likely to break his or her bones than someone who doesn't. Then there's smoking. An increased risk of any kind of injury is not sufficient justification to be constrained in one's leisure or clothing choices, as long as they are both withing the law. Of course, as has already been discussed here and elsewhere, the issue with clothing and rape is a little more complex. However, since legislation that might have led to more rapists being convicted, rather than most of them getting off scot free because it's such a hard crime to prove, has just been scotched because of knee-jerk reactions by talking heads, it's not like we'll ever be able to have a sensible argument about it.

I'm really tired of going over the arguments again and again...but here's someone who does it quite well.

What you wear has little or nothing to do with your likelihood of being raped. Being raped isn’t about being sexually desirable, it’s about being subjugated. Rape is not about sex, it’s about power. Witness the recent allegations about systematic rape of women in Libya, among many other examples of rape as a war crime. This fixation on the stranger rape of a woman in a minidress is a sideshow. Most women who are raped are wearing jeans, or pyjamas, and are raped by someone they know. Seeking to pin rape on clothes is an exercise in victim blaming, pure and simple.I'm pleased to see she agrees with Aubs and me!

It doesn't alter the fact that it is irresponsible for anyone to walk around at night with few clothes on, especially while intoxicated or drugged up.
So it is as much about drugs like alcohol as it is about clothes.
And nobody is stopping women from doing this if they want to. But I can understand a policeman having less sympathy for them than for other rape victims.
