Recent discussions in the Vienna city council meetings have concerned the introduction of 'vaporettos’ (amphibious buses) on the Danube and the Danube canal, to extend the current public transport net, especially in view of the 2008 European Football Championships. Vienna has looked to Istanbul for ideas.
Similar plans also exist in Manchester for the introduction of 'vaporettos’, although the Manchester council refer to them, in grandiose terms, as ‘catamaran taxis’.
The Manchester council primarily see them as buses which would brings fans to Man-U’s Old Trafford ground from distant parking lots. It’s envisaged that catamarans of opposing fans would be quietly sunk along the way, at appropriate locations on the navigable bits of the river Irwell.

What a ravenous Spring day it was turning out to be.
Liam's shaven head glistened in the sunlight as he dipped a chubby hand into the gentle waters of the Irwell. He liked to sit at the back of the launch, under the single, pure white, embroidered parasol, that swayed gently in the warm breeze. He said he got hot in his new MunYew 100% acrylic away strip shirt and wanted to keep cool for the match - the truth was, he relished studying Liam's sunlit face, from his shadey oasis.
"Read another Shelley poem, Wayne. You know I love your reading"
"I will, just for you, but I'm so wistful today, I'd rather stare at the sky"
Just then, another launch chugged by, full of sprightly Man City fans, waving their hands and making their jolly gestures.
"How lucky we all are, Liam. Look at those young Gazelles, mooning and peeing out of the back window. If only every day was like this. I want it to go on forever"
"Come back to me Wayne, come back and read some more. Come along, read some from that new poetry book I bought you at Mr.Fergies bookshop. Go on, read me..erm...read me 'You Muppett' ...no, I know, read me 'Tozza', you know it's my favourite"
Wayne opened the book lazily and began to read. As he read, Liam's head rolled backwards as he drank in every raspy vowell, every coughed consonant. Wayne stopped. He couldn't restrain his heart...
"Whatever happens, Liam, tell me you'll never leave Manchester. Tell me that everything will be fine. Tell me that I need never be alone again"
Liam lifted his palm from the water and stroked away a tear from Wayne's cheek.
"Well sail this silver road as long as there's a cup to win - we'll always be, just like this, together in the sun"
"Oh please let that be true, Liam. Please let it be true..."
-------------- to be continued--------------
Next week: Wayne and Liam get seperated at the turnstile.
