George Melly has died.... George Melly, a flamboyant, gravel-voiced jazz singer, critic and raconteur, died Thursday, his wife said. He was 80 years old.
Though suffering from lung cancer and dementia, Melly continued performing nearly until the end. He gave his last concert on June 10. He died at home in London, Diana Melly said.
Melly was noted for loud suits, louder ties and the image he cultivated of a hard-drinking throwback to the jazz age.
After his navy service in World War II, Melly relished the life of a peripatetic musician. "Hard drinking and squalid digs, but absolutely no regrets," he once recalled.
He gave up the musician's life in 1962 to concentrate on writing about surrealist art and working as a music and theater critic.
And, had he been more computer literate, Melly would have been a welcome member of thee Cyber Lounge....he would have made a fine Pink Melly said a spokesperson for the well known Madrigal Cyber Lounge

I don't know about the jazz career ( heard him once ... and it sounded poor and old-fashioned) But I have heard and read his Art reviews. They really stank, I'm afraid. He always veered towards the surrealists (outside of 90s performance art, one of the worst forms invented) and trotted out old tat.
He seemed like a funny bloke though - should have been a comedian.

Good point ... I could've dug out some daubs from George ( he did smear the oils around a bit) and entertain Sandy, once again.
...good idea, Dazz, thanks - "Jazz around the Load of Old Quock", I like it !
