New National Theatre building opens after 21 years of waitingThe Slovak National Theatre had the gala opening of its new building in the evening of April 14. The building took almost 21 years and two political regimes to complete. Broadcast live on both public television channels and on public radio during prime time, the gala attracted several hundred attendees including President Ivan Gašparoviè and First Lady Silvia Gašparovièová. The first plans were made 1986 during the era of social realism architecture. The theatre has 1,700 seats in its three halls that will be used for drama, ballet and opera productions. Costing over Sk4.5 billion (€134 million), the building represents a per-capita cost of some Sk900 (€27) in taxes from every citizen of Slovakia, which has a population of 5.4 million. On Sunday, the gala continued with a performance of the play Tanèiareò.
