If you either smoke, are overweight or over 40yrs of age but in a stable relationship you have less chance of IVF treatment than a single mother or lesbian. Due to resources the medical professional have to pick and choose and prioritise between women who are desperate for children. Have they got it right of is it another descent into liberalism and political correctness? bbc link news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/health/5296200.stm

The whole issue of IVF is bound to be a controversial on. Of course it must be desperately upsetting not to be able to have children if you want them but no-one ever died as a result of not having a baby. Considering that people are being denied life-saving drugs, it could appear that having IVF on the NHS at all is a bit of a luxury and the money might be better spent elsewhere.
If it has been decided that a certain amount of money is a available for IVF and it needs to be allocated, I don’t have an issue the BFS recommendations. If you are going to spend a lot of money helping people to conceive, I don’t think that it’s too much to ask that they help themselves a bit as well.

We don't have National health care so what happens in our case tends to be that the middle class is left out. In the states, if you are receiving public assistance(on welfare or "on the dole" in the UK) There is some money avaiable for IVF. I personally feel that it doesn't matter how fat you are, but if you are on welfare you shouldn't be eligible for IVF. Using public funding for IVF is touchy in the first place because any regulations regarding the matter seems nanny-ish to me. edit: while reading the article I came upon this link regarding the "need for father" rule for IVF. news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/health/5175640.stmThis statement really p!ssed me off... Josephine Quintavalle of Comment on Reproductive Ethics said: "This is clearly an attempt to be non-discriminatory but actually this is in itself discriminatory because you are suggesting that a child does not need a father." I think that the article is saying that a 'healthy environment' includes good role models and support network of caring loving adults, including male and female role models. but that does not have to be the child's father. or even mother. is "reproductive ethics" the same as "right-wing anti-abortionists" in the states?

Have they got it right of is it another descent into liberalism and political correctness? overweight over 40 single lesbian all of the above should have to pay for IVF because none are really suitable unless they can guarantee that they will provide a happy home for the duration at no cost to the tax payer who has little say as to just how this IVF babe will be brought up while at the same time being expected to pay for its creation....

Yeah I agree, particularly on the subject of the 'nanny state' that reigns in this country over here.
They allow smokers and overweight women to give birth naturally so whats the difference with IVF. treatment. None!
Kate Moss had a few quick oily rags sittin on the apples and pears of the Maternity Ward and no one said 'sorry, you can't give birth because you ingested nicotine'. I'm not saying smoking or obesity or even drug taking disallows women from giving birth or even being on the welfare state. But to give preferential treatment to single mothers on welfare and lesbian couples 'ahead' of married couples on the flimsy excuse that they've eaten a few too many cream cakes or smoked a ciggie, pipe, cigar is ridiculous.
In effect what they are doing is merely creating more children in single parent families and using the balance of the scale as an excuse to pick and choose how to spend money and in the end MONEY is the main consideration.

ok here's a question... Obesity can be caused by both environmental reasons (overeating, etc) AND genetics. This led me to thinking that if obesity is an issue, what about genetic issues that the couples have no idea about? what f the IVF creates a child that needs many organ transpants or has other (expensive) medical problems? Or does the price of the genetic profile for all IVF people outweigh the cost of the possible "defective" person? How do you classify who is wanted and needed over someone else? How are they measuring morality "stability" required for IVF? I understand the need to make sure that public money is spent responsibly. But they had better be careful in how they word the definitions. Maybe they don't need to in your country. I am aware that nmy view may be culturally "american" but I feel that these are legitimate questions. Openly discriminating against people with disabilities or medical needs seems a bit much to me. Of course, I guess that not having a national health care system does this by default. This is an interesting topic overall.
