Eugene Delacroix died today (Aug 14th). Considered by Baudelaire to be the finest painter of his generation...which is one of the few facts I know about Art due to the fact that I had a morbid interest in the life and works of both Baudelaire and his US counterpart Edgar Allen Poe.
On a lighter note Halle Berry was b. today..you can try guessing her age and probably get it wrong I reckon.

No she's 40..I thought she'd be early 30's. I'll choose this one because of the title:- Odalisque, Mimi? Whatever it means it sounds good.

Odalisque... Whatever it means it sounds good. not really....a woman with little choice! A member of the Harem..it sounds even better. As an artist yourself, CG..what particular qualites would you say resonated with Baudelaire to speak of him in such glowing terms. Is itthe technique, brushwork perhaps or the subject itself..the use of light/colour etc.. << strokes chin >>

It's Wim Wenders birthday today (film director of 'BuenaVista Social Club', 'The Goalkeeper's Fear of the Penalty', and 'Paris, Texas' amongst other stuff). Sarah Brightman's too. I don't know if she's that bright, but I have a soft spot for her. And it's the 50 years anniversary of the death of Berthold Brecht. So tonight all the Mackie Messers of the World will be out on the prowl, accosting passers-by in the dimly lit alleys, and growling "show me the way to the next whiskey bar, oh, don't ask why"

Madrigal, I have few illusions about myself...(too many about other people maybe!) so I would never describe myself as an artist...more a hack...artisan at a pinch, but even that would be too grand.
I never appreciated Delacroix, and it's 30 years since I read the works of Baudelaire, so....
Happy Wims to Wenders - Paris, Texas is such a good film.

30 years..surely not, CG..you must have been a very prococious child like me Actually 14-18 yrs is about the limit to be reading strange gothic ravings by Baudelaire and Poe. I blame an early teenage interest in the works of HP. Lovecraft and then it grew into an unhealthy passion for Rimbaud and other hashish smoking french poets. Fortunately I managed to wend my way back to Manchester via the laudanum and opiate ravings of Mancunian teenager Thomas De Quincy.

Indeed the precocious teenage years saw me reading my way through many a classic - i prefer Rimbaud to Baudelaire i think...i must get those books out again.
I've always been fond of De Quincy...i just love the way he always solves the case in 45 minutes...quite brilliant.
