Ancient Rome: The Rise and Fall of an Empire bbc1 - second of six
What was the casting team on when they gave the part of Caesar to Sean Pertwee? He'd be more suited in a slightly camp minor part rather than that of the great writer, soldier and politician, Caesar. If they couldn't find an affordable actor, they could at least have given him elocution lessons....
John Shrapnel, as Pompey, is the only decent actor here.

John Shrapnel, as Pompey, is the only decent actor here. Agreed. It was pretty bloody awful wasn't it. I missed the first one (Nero?) but it got roundly slated in the weekend papers. General comment was "Well, it's got to get better". If Nero was worse than this the Beeb should be ashamed.

Just to be controversial - I liked it.
I agree that the bloke who played Pompey acted the socks off Caesar but I feel that Caesar (the character) was portrayed in a very bad light. Whether he deserved it or not I don't know.

I saw a program about Caesar a few months ago. Another BBC drama with Ciaran Hinds (a much better actor) called 'Rome'. www.hbo.com/rome/cast/actor/ciaran_hinds.htmlThis Pertwee chap didn't look like he had the strength to lift a fork never mind a sword. Did you see his thin arms?

That's so not you, Sandy! ;D I know. They don't call me easy-going Sandy for nothing. I've just got involved in a game on the www.bbc.co.uk/history website about a Roman dagger adventure.
