I was interested in this: www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-hampshire-54099591As a boy, I was on the top deck of a bus which did just this en route to school one day. There were two routes, one allowed double deckers, the other had a bridge resembling this one and was used by single deckers. It turned out the driver normally drove the single decker route, but that day had been reassigned to s double decker. He simply forgot what he was driving. We realised at once he'd gone the wrong way and hastily abandoned the upper deeck. Despite banging on the glass to his cab, the conductor was unable to attract his attention, and we sailed under the bridge. I don't recall a great deceleration or bump. There was a loud bang as the top deck was taken off, followed by a clanging crash as it landed on the road behind us, more or less intact. The bus stopped immediately, which was just outside the council bus garage. Nobody suffered any injury, but the driver was obviously badly shaken. We were all taken to a replacement bus and arrived more or less on time at school. I don't know what happened to the driver. He had simply made a mistake; something that anyone could do. Hopefully he didn't lose his job over it.
