We said goodbye to our faithful family retainer, the dog, on Monday morning. Over the weekend, she gave up eating and her rear legs stopped working and it was obvious the end had come. We had to carry her to the car to get her to the vet's on large towel, and were with her as she breathed her last. We are still reeling from it.
Our children think we should get another dog, but neither of us wants to go through this again.
Over the past few weeks we have been sleeping shifts in order to be with her through the night and to let her out every 30 minutes, so are now trying to reestablish normal sleeping habits with little success so far.

Oh, Exco. I'm sorry to hear that. Inevitable, and you gave her the best end you could; but it's never easy.

Thanks Aubrey. I know you've been through the same thing recently . Hopefully the pain is easing a bit for you now.

Yes, he was ready. It was not a difficult decision. I miss him though.

I am so very sorry Exco, and know exactly how you feel. One of the big problems with life is you outlive a lot of very good dogs. Just take a bit of time, life wont be the same, but it will be a little better in a months time than it is now, and better in a years time than it is next month.
Chin up my friend.

Thanks Jonjel. We will get over it, but it was a heartbreaking business. We were with her to the end. I fondled her ears and rubbed her nose and she gave me a last licks and was gone.

Been there my friend, and am curranty sitting in my 'front room' which I have converted to my office. Photographs on the wall, and about 2 feet away is where with the help of a wonderful vet my Avatar breathed his last. There is absolutely nothing anyone can say to you. The tears will eventually stop.

Thanks Skylark. We're getting over it, but it seems strange to hear the post coming through the letter box without being given warning by furious barking, or to put a plate of biscuits on the coffee table without them being seized upon etc.

Our dog never barked at the postman or even the doorbell, but howled when the phone rang, and didn't stop when the ringing stopped. It is strange to be able to hold a telephone conversation now.
