This made me think of one of Beachcomber's attention catching headlines
"Coach and forty horses stuck in chimney!"
The following article began "The event to which the above headline refers has yet to occurs, however...." before going on to something utterly unrelated to coaches, horses or chimneys.
In this case, the event actually HAS occurred, and then some, as 1,500 is thought to be a significant underestimate. Nor is it an attempt at humour. When you think of it, the cabinet the result of the Eton - Oxbridge education system, arguably the best British education system and undoubtedly the most expensive in the country, has been humbled and utterly defeated in strategic thinking by a brainless, mindless chemical molecule, the covid-19 virus.
I suspect a sharper set of knives might have done better, by formulating a clear long term plan to contain the bug, understood and followed willingly be the electorate because it makes sense. Instead we've ha a series of ad-hoc panic knee-jerk reactions to events almost always too late and always abandoned too early, about turns and major policy changes and incessant turd polishing from the PM.
It is hard not to despair sometimes.

Where do we begin on this, other than to wish you and Mrs E a happy and safe Christmas.
C19 is not the fault of the government, and I don't think any government of any colour regardless of which schools they attended would have got it all right. In my view they have done all they can and despite hindsight there is little else that can be done. Lots of pople have 20/20 hindsight vison on this and they have no more answers than the current government.
By pouring a lot of money into the research Oxford University (Astra Zenica are simply the manufacturing arm) have managed to come up with a vaccine in less than a year, and that is unprecedented. This normally takes 10 years or more. I know some of that group and they have been working 24/7. If ever anyone deserved knighthoods and other honours it is them.
As for the channel ports being blocked, just about everyone I have spoken to thinks this is not really about Covid but about Brexit and the French being more than a bit pissed off that Boris is not caving in. Fishing is a tiny part of our industry, but the principle is massive.
