This seems to be a skill that every young cyclist aspires to, and many are masters of it.
As a boy I had a bike and so did my friends, but I don't think the idea of riding it like a monocycle ever occurred to us although I think we did a lot of other things that caused decent citizens to tut. It seems to be a trick that has been invented since my youth, and I am curious as to its origins.
Walking along the high street I noticed one young expert on the opposite pavement weaving in and out of the pedestrians on one wheel with consummate skill. It didn't earn the approval of said pedestrians, but you had to admire his skill at it. He must have gone over a hundred yards before turning down a side street out of my view.
Was there an inventor of the wheelie? Did it leak from circus cyclists? It is a good example of a meme I think.
