I bought a metronome this week. There is one built into the piano, and somewhere I have an electronic one I made some years back. I like the traditional movement which I find easier to follow than a tick, and the electronic one has a meter with a needle for that reason but its not big enough to be seen out of the corner of your eye, so I decided to get a traditional wind up one advertised on the internet.
It works fine, and seems accurate too, and it looks like real wood, which is how it was advertised. But apart from the little wooden Pyramid at the top, and the bit that comes off to reveal the pendulum, it is actually made of MDF, got up to look like mahogany.
I'm a bit miffed at being conned. I guess MDF actually IS wood, but it is really not what one thinks of as wood in my opinion. I'm undecided whether to keep it - it serves its purpose after all - but on the other hand... What do you think? I guess Amazon will refund me, but there seems to be only one company turning out the traditional ones and they use the same weasel words about all of them. In a way, MDF is probably a BETTER choice of material. It is likely to be more stable than 'real' wood which is always prone to warping and cracking but am I trying to convince myself it's OK?
The other defect is that the bell which indicates 2/4, 3/4, etc rhythms needs deadening. It resonates for two long and at speed you can't tell which beat its on. That's easy enough to do with sticky tape or something, but if I'm going to send it back I suppose I shouldn't mess with it.
Decisions decision and hassle everywhere!
