Seeing the price of a kg of dishwasher salt in the supermarket prompted me to look at the machine's manual.
It seems if the water hardness is below 8 (Clarke scale) you needn't bother with salt at all. If you buy tablets with a built-in softening chemical, you don't need salt if the hardness is below 20.
United Utilities has a website which told me that my postcoded's hardness was 7.28, so I've disable the salt warning light and will not be buying dishwasher salt any more.
You can't use table/cooking salt apparently, and the stuff they sell is overpriced. So I suggest you do a little checking and maybe save yourself the price of a pint from time to time.
