Let us make the position clear. We can begin by saying, not only that we respect Muhammad, but that no serious person could fail to respect Muhammad - a unique and luminous historical being. Judged by the continuities he was able to set in motion, he remains a titanic figure, and, for Muslims, all-answering: a revolutionary, a warrior, and a sovereign, a Christ and a Caesar, 'with a Koran in one hand', as Bagehot imagined him, 'and a sword in the other'. Muhammad has strong claims to being the most extraordinary man who ever lived. And always a man, as he always maintained, and not a god. Naturally we respect Muhammad. But we do not respect Muhammad Atta.
Until recently it was being said that what we are confronted with, here, is 'a civil war' within Islam. That's what all this was supposed to be: not a clash of civilisations or anything like that, but a civil war within Islam. Well, the civil war appears to be over. And Islamism won it. The loser, moderate Islam, is always deceptively well-represented on the level of the op-ed page and the public debate; elsewhere, it is supine and inaudible. We are not hearing from moderate Islam. Whereas Islamism, as a mover and shaper of world events, is pretty well all there is.tinyurl.com/k2npll

I'm quite intrigued by this article although its a bit early to go through it with a fine-toothed comb. I'll be perfectly honest, I have never read the Bible completely let alone the Quran. Its news to me that Mohammed was a 'titanic figure' but then he must been to have created this worldwide revolution. I didn't even know of any proof that he actually existed such is my lack of knowledge on the matter. My interest in World religions is negligible despite having some belief that there is some reason behind existence. If there isn't quite frankly we may as well do what the hell we want whilst we're here for this very short period.
I've taken out the paragraph that caught the eye and as usual I've been to lazy to read the rest. But Amis is fairly left wing if also a maverick (he's a friend of Chris Hitchens).
In the meantime I've IMed Abu and suggested that if he has any points to make he's welcome to do so here if not on JSG.

What bothers me about religion is that very few practice that which is preached. Especially the three main Monetheistic religions.

Well exactly..it doesnt say anything in the Bible about shafting choir boys. I'm not sure what the Koran says but it does supposedly suggest that its against Gods Will to kill yourself and I cant think of a more extreme way to do it than by Suicide bomb.
