Fascinating insight into Romany Culture and Food.
Romanies eat whatever they can find on the land be it Rabbit, Hare, Hedgehog or Squirrels. Apparently Hedgehog in particularly is a delicacy due the the sweetness of the meat and lack of fat. Another surprise was that there is such a thing as 'Gypsy Radio' catering purely for gypsies and warning them to keep to tradition rather than eat the bollocks - literally - that exists in sausages and junk food.
There was one food that the Romany Community will not touch with a bargepole and that is anything that crawls in the water such as shrimps, prawns and crabs. These are known as 'Insects of the Sea' and they are perfectly snesible and correct in thinking that. Its akin to eating fried bluebottles.
What normal person would eat a bottom feeder that lives next to sewage outlets - pass the hedgehog!
