I have today signed up for 3 courses at my local college. Adultery made easy, pick your own melons, and how to handle sausages. Now joking aside the three courses that i have chosen cost me 150£, so you can imagine my surprise to see that one course was free. It is called "english for speakers of another language" Hello, they get a course for free, why I ask. If they are here I presume they are working (why else would they be here) so will someone explain why an out of work 50 year old woman who has no IT skills would have to pay full or reduced enrollment fees for an IT course and the foreigners get a course for nothing. or is my 150£ paying for it? Answers to Hungarians, Bulgarians, Romanians in waiting R US.@ EU.co.uk

The government has "priorities" for funding - these are skills for life (basic literacy and numeracy for people who are below level 2 ESOL counts as this). Any first level two qual (ie any level 2 qual provided the candidate doesn't have a level two qual - ie 5 gcses at grade c or above, nvq L2 etc). These are all free.
Other courses are free provided that the candidate is (and can prove it) on benefits - these do not include invalidy/incapacity or pension.
Anyone else has to pay - that includes unwaged partners of wage earners.

I have today signed up for 3 courses at my local college. … the three courses that i have chosen cost me 150£, I couldn't believe 3 courses at evening class could cost as much as you say, but I checked a website and it's true, you can easily pay that much. At least there are some interesting classes, like 'Banjo (or Saxophone) For Beginners' - £40. Nah, for half that price I can learn 'Afro-Oriental Rhythmns On Djembe and Conga Drums'. Or maybe I'll do 'Cooking Autumn Vegetables With Garden Herbs'. I can post photos of my dishes.
