Why do toilet bowls have a lid? I am not talking about the seat wooden or plastic it is there to keep your bum from freezing to the cold bowl. I mean the lid. It can't keep any stink in, so is it for decoration? Is it to allow us to put a knitted cover on it as we do on the teapot. no wonder the Continentals think we are a trifle mad or sad.

The lid is there to keep microscopic pieces of waste from being thrown into the air and onto your nearby toothbrush during the flush.
Feng Shui says:
//The entry to the home is where career and opportunities come into the home. If the bathroom is located directly in front of the entry, your opportunities could flow out immediately.
•You can help prevent a loss of opportunity by always closing the bathroom door and toilet lid (when not in use) to prevent the unnecessary escape of chi.
•To help resolve the situation of the toilet being located in the center of the house (the prosperity part), place a full-length mirror on the bathroom/toilet closet door. The mirror will help deflect chi and also create an illusion of the bathroom/toilet not being there. •Fresh flowers and the toilet in an alcove will help prevent the flushing of chi.
•Another way to counteract opportunity and prosperity from being flushed away is to keep a bowl of pebbles or fresh flower arrangement on the toilet tank or on a shelf above the toilet. By adding this element of earth, you will help control the water.
•A black or red rug at the base of the toilet will also provide protection against wealth loss.
•Good color schemes for a properly located bathroom are light grays, cream colors and pale blues. If your bathroom is located in the center of the house, paint it red. The fire element will increase income and therefore counteract the drain on wealth. //

My toilet is separate from the bathroom where the toothbrushes are located. I would suggest you try to achieve the same kid of hygene by applying for a council loan.

Thanks for the helpful information, Feng Shui! I see I was wrong to paint my bathroom two shades of turquoise... Hmmm, a red bathroom? Very useful for messy murderers A council grant would not help me, gus, unless it were enough to build an extension; this flat has as many rooms as it can take and the bathroom is far too small to partition off!
