THE LAST SEVERAL decades prior to the First World War were a terrible time for Slovakia within the Austro-Hungarian Empire. Hungarian authorities were ruthless in their implementation of Magyarization, which oppressed everything Slovak, especially identification as a nationality. This catastrophe resulted in Slovaks forming an independent state with the Czechs. Thus, Czech and Slovak captives from Russia formed a well-trained resistance army during WWI to contribute to the defeat of the monarchy. This was the only way, according to the politicians of the time, to achieve an independent Czechoslovak state.
The resistance army's most pivotal and successful battles took place close to the Ukrainian village of Zborov in July 1917. This postcard shows Czechoslovak soldiers having lunch in trenches a few days before.
