I was listening to the bloke -whose name escapes me - who thought up the bright idea of the Big Issue. Personally my opinion of the Big Issue is that its a pain in the ass but thats beside the point. As an ex-down and out and Socialist you'd expect him to be a male version of Polly Toynbee the hand wringing liberal whinger.
Not so. He wants to clear most tramps of the street citing them as mainly scroungers and force them to work. Meanwhile he wants stiffer sentences and put all those with paedophile convictions behind bars for life!
..and I though I was right-wing! Presumably inside every left-winger theres a little Uncle Joe Stalin itching to get out. But then we all knew that anyway.

I used to buy it when it first started - often several times a week! I think it was 60p then and most people would say 'keep the change'. Then it went up to £1 and now I believe it's more than that - a big mistake. Because i bet not many people actually read it and to have to fiddle about with change is a real pain when you've got your hands full of shopping.
After an unfortunate incident with one Big Issue seller, I have never bought another copy.

A very sweet young African comes to our shopping precinct downstairs selling "Augustin", which is the Viennese equivalent. He always smiles and opens the door for me. I often buy a copy but I give it back as it's all written in a foreign language. I saw a copy of "The Big Issue" many years ago and was surprised at the number of articles by well known writers who, presumably, wrote for free. Haven't seen it for ages though.

Well I'd open the door for an 81 yr old 'lady' such as yourself, Mimi so I wouldnt burst out in applause just yet.
Personally I'm more inclined to think that Melons experience is more the norm in this country but it seems no matter where you go..whether Slovakia, Austria or Siberia it always far superior to 'Great' Britain.

No of course I don't mind. In fact I often sidle up to complete strangers and whisper: "I'm 81, you know." Young people nowadays are so kind.

Don't just whisper it, Mimi, it something to be proud of. Sidle up to strangers and scream 'I'm 81 and proud of it!'.
