You might try Fellini's 'Juliet of the Spirits' (Giulietta degli spiriti) and Antonioni's 'The Red Desert' (Il deserto rosso I suppose) if you want a treat.
Both these are so visually stunning that the dialogue can be ignored completely without missing too much. The plots are hardly earth shaking anyway, and the odd reconisable italian word is all that's necessary to know roughly whats going on.

I love Pan's Labyrinth, its one of my favourite ever films, although it is pretty brutal.
City of God is also a foreign language film (I think?) which is also excellent.

Das Boot was outstanding. Was it a film, though, or was it made for television? If we include TV, then one of the best, most watchable films on that medium has just finished on BBC 4. A Danish thriller, with sub titles. "The Killing" ran for 20 episodes. Unmissable!

Don't say!!
Herzog's films are great - The Enigma of Kaspar Hauser is a good one to start with.
And Bunuel.
But there is a lovely film called The Nasty Girl about a German girl who wants to do a school project about her town during the war. It's not at all naturalistic, if that bothers you; it has things like the girl, grown, facing the camera and explaining something, and the camera panning round - not cutting - to a scene from her childhood.

Now you're all making me feel bad because I don't like foreign films (except La Cage Aux Folles).

Actually, I've been meaning to watch Das Boot (because I like war films) and the next time it's on t.v. I'll give it a try. O.K.?

I've just watched Mesrine - two films for the price of one there. Very good - a sort of French Bonnie & Clyde.
Das Boot was the bloody krauts, you Irish traitor!
Fassbender films!!! (Is this the worst films ever thread?)

Despair is really good, with Dirk Bogarde. But that's in English (as I've just noticed).
