www.independent.co.uk/extras/indybest/arts-books/the-50-best-summer-reads-2295629.htmli've had a quick shuffty through the 50 books selected, and ordered one or two of the newer ones... but was very pleased to see that some classics were still being read: a handful of dust a month in the country the go between. ...all 3 translated pretty well to film, but deserve reading. and Conrad's Victory, Laurie Lee and Vikram Seth's Golden Gate. some great choices.

The Butterfly Isles sounds my kind of holiday read; I'm a little cautious about what I take on walking holidays which can be quite stressy. But I never buy anything now without checking the size of the print. Are the Penguin re-prints in the original typeface, do you think?

ah yes, i too have reached the age when the size of the print can sway me towards or away from a book purchase!
i ordered the butterfly book, but it's not arrived yet.
listening to 'a good read' the other day they were talking about Cannery Row - Penguin Classics - and had a yen to re-read it. unfortunately i seem to have lent it somewhere along the line since 1974 - the rest of Steinbeck are there - and just looking at my copy of Tortilla Flat, the print is big enough for my eyes for the time being.
