I devoured the Bond books when I first came across them.
In my first week at university, I was set an essay asking something like, Are they, as a paradigmatic whatsit and assuming no loss of heat to the surroundings, novels? As an impressionable 8-yr-old, I bought into the leading question and resonantly answered 'No'.
I even went so far as to compare them (unfavourably) to the low-brow Rider Haggard adventure novels, which I loved.
Then I twigged. I was obsessed with Ursula Andress (and her bulging bikini) in Fleming's ‘Dr No’ (1962), and in Haggard's ‘She’ (1965). But I've got over it now; and will take down the bulging bikini picture tomorrow. (Or will I?)
