I caught the Prof for abt 20 mins. She interviewed loads of other Profs, and no Plebs, as far as I noticed. Is this a good idea?

The cosmopolitanism of ancient Rome provided a very interesting comparison with modern British multiculturalism which was made quite explicit by Mary Beard.
But the past is a foreign country, they do things differently there! For starters, there was no totalitarian Islam endorsing the murder of people of other faiths who did not agree Muhammad was God's Prophet.
Happy days! Apart from the odd Hebrew they were all pretty much polytheists until the Christians came along and provided lion food.
Funny, isn't it, we call martyrs people who are killed for their faith and Islam calls martyrs people who kill for theirs.
I thought the whole programme was a real eye-opener and very enjoyable.

Do I detect an analogy between Islam and the Roman Empire, here, jean?
I can go along with that! Islam IS a supranational empire, after all, which places ITS citizens above lesser breeds and indeed condones their murder.
The question is do you also equate Muhammad with Caligula?

No, I don't think so - Marcus Aurelius, perhaps?

i very much enjoy her enthusiastic presenting style and would like to see the bbc give a platform to similarly down to earth academics.

It's brilliant, I agree, bets. I'm looking forward to tomorrow's episode 3.

The Romans had the same kind of repressive state as the anti Muslims seem to want here - arbitrary arrest with conviction without trial for anyone suspected of undermining the state. They'd probably go as far as execution as well - maybe not as far as human (Christian: read Muslim) torches lining the Appenine way, was it?

And where do you find the evidence for what the "anti-muslims" want here, aubrey?
I suggested stopping the importation of spouses from abroad (which circumvents our citizenship law) toprevent the disproportionate exponential growth of of the muslims community in the UK. But that hardly seems draconian, unless you see the nation state as an outmoded form of social organisation and the UK as having no values worth protecting from those with a totalitarian mindset?
If that is the case, spit it out, man, then are will know where you are coming from.

Is this a good idea? who can say? if you're using licence payers dosh to make some programs about ancient Rome probably best to get profs with smarts to talk about it all. us plebs can do the watching, and the learning!

Ms Beard is too ugly to be on telly. I should be presenting because I am beautiful. You know I am. So just shut up with your hating reposts. And no. She's not my sister
