Okay i will admit it. it is a shyte -hole, but a nice shyte -hole. Btw i have it on good authority that it had bad housing, sanitation and poor roads under the Soviets but that the level of filth in the streets since privatisation took over is something of a recent phenonemen. Again one could blame the inhabitants for this but in view of the fact of the low incomes and the fact that bin collecting has to be paid for (free under the Soviets) is it any wonder. People are taking their rubbish to public waste paper container on the streets and depositing their rubbish their. These are choc a bloc and the wild stray dogs and cats not to mention the rats that are a part of every Ukraine town spread it all over the place.

I made a statement that the Ukraine is a nice shyte hole, let me clarify that. The people are so friendly is is sometime embarrasing. To be invited to their houses you are made to feel like a king, this as nothing to do with the fact that you are a foreigner the thing applies to everyone. It is also very cheap as a foreigner from the west to live there. Vodka ranging from one pound a bottle to 5£.. underground single fare to any destination 60 kopeks (around 6p) as an illustaration how cheap it is let me tell you about the time I invited people to a restaurant. Just before leaving the Ukraine I made arrangements with 9 people who had invited me into their homes to have a meal on me at a rather poshish restaurant. We had 3 courses including coffee and desert, two bottles of Russian champagne, two bottles of vodka ( the Ukrainians never have a meal without vodka ;D) a beer for me and one of the other men and i called for the bill. it was 600 hryvnia ( as near as I can pronouce it, greevna) this in pounds is around 60£ it is of course a lot of money for a Ukrainian but for me for 10 people I was happy.

I am glad you've decided to come clean and admit the Armitage Shanks qualities of Ukraine.
Naturally the people are ingrained with inherent warmth and kindness. ROB...ROBIN...stop twisting my arm please, I'm trying to type here..
I have not been for a fair time, which is a shame, as I like to do penence once in a while.
Would welcome your review of Minsk, if you have been ?

Would welcome your review of Minsk, if you have been ? I have not been to Belarus kipper but I have heard good things about it. These are that the prices are similar to the Ukraine but the highways and infrastruture not to mention cleanliness are vastly superior. I might add that i have contact with a woman from Gomel which is down the road a piece from Minsk. She has invited me but i am rather busy. next week i am off to Germany. gus

Minsk is cleaner, I would say. But windscreen wiper theft is as common.
If you like Ukrainian cement, then you'll like Minsk.

As i have said I can't speak about Minsk and it is true that car theft is rife in Ukraine especially those with foreign number plates. But a patrolled and locked car park at 150h a month (£15) one has no need to find one's car jacked up on some house bricks. Anyway did i not read that there is more car crime in Liverpool than in Europe. Btw I also read that you are now safer from muggings in New York than London and i can tell you that I have never once felt threatened in Kiev by anyone. If you are stopped by a traffic cop on the highway (well they have to supplement their wages ;D) just slip a 20h (£2) note in with your documents and you will get a smart salute and a babble of Russian/Ukrainien that probably says "God bless you Sir" ;D gus

Gus takes his two Ukrainians to a typical English resort. ..yeh the last resort..they'll soon be back home, mate. At least they've prepared for the weather, Gus. Not much Global Warming in Blackpool..more like the Baltic coast in Winter.

Sandy, I'm surprised at you. I'm off to the dentist next week and did not appreciate such a remark. As you well know, the Cheesers have strong teeth because they are constantly gnashing and grinding them.
