A shortage of food during WWI due to the mass sinking of the merchant navy and an acute lack of protection via convoy from the Navy led some soldiers to steal food from horses to hide in Gas masks which were found to be handy asmakeshift nosebags. Many soldiers subsisted on just one bag of oats per day, whilst others suffering from post traumatic stress would often trot around the Parade Ground whilst neighing and in some sad cases could be found supping from water troughs alongside their horses.
