increasingly… people have to nowadays prove their innocence, not the authorities prove them guilty. That’s a fair point, PJ: there does seem to be much more of a “guilty until proven innocent” attitude at work in authority than there used to be. I don't see why the umpire couldn't have publically presented the ball. I suppose they could do, although I imagine that it is not being released for political/ PR reasons: it probably wouldn’t actually do anything to help the situation and will just generate more talk and controversy. I suspect that it will be easy to see what you want to see, if and when the ball is revealed. It will be probably be difficult to say, categorically, “that scratch was made by a fingernail” or “that scuff was clearly caused by landing on concrete”. I hope that the disciplinary hearing is able to take place soon, that it is conducted fairly and that everyone involved can accept its conclusions.

BBC Headline today Darrell Hair offers to resign if he gets $500,000. WTF is that all about? The way things work and to keep everyone online and happy it looks like he'll become the scapegoat and I suspect he's gently 'pushed' because essentially you've got one of the few major Cricket teams not trusting him. So I can see his logic really. He's panicking and trying to get a deal beforehand. No-one is going to trust some MCC meeting or whatever. They'll fudge the issue just like the Govt fudged the Kelly issue and do anything to keep everyone calm and placated.

My theory is he'd been sampling some legal drugs (out of a bottle) when he wrote that letter/sent that email. He's withdrawn it now, but too late. He's gorn, I'm afraid. What a very strange series of events.

Oh bugger, now I am beginning to feel a bit sorry for the silly old git.
What the .... is happening to me. There is no way Hair will ever umpire again. If anyone has brought the game into disrepute it has to be him.
But the rules he used to punish Pakistan were not HIS rules. They were the ICC rules. So they have to carry much of the responsibity for the debacle.
Instead they have hung the poor sod out to dry as a scapegoat.
The rules must be changed to stop this happening again.
I did have one good idea which some of you may like to consider (but not Gus as he has gone asleep)
Secretly add the ball to twenty other cricket balls, that have had similar 'punishment' for a similar number of overs, and SEE if a panel of cricketers can spot which one is the one from the Test match concerned.
If they can all (or even a big majority) easily pick this one out, then there is a good reason to be suspicious of the Pakistan side. If not there is none at all.
What says you?

Thats far too sensible a solution.
When everyone gets together for a 'World Cricket Comittee Meeting' the main subject is how to keep all parties content and offer a compromise because thousands of jobs and future test series depend on it. One solitary umpire is neither here not there. Most people (even cricket watchers) aren't even aware of them at all so he's easily paid off and all is well again.
In fact, Hare has been quite clever by attempting to jump before he's pushed. He's put the ball back into their court by doing that..I wouldnt be surprised if he'd done it on purpose rather than in impatient haste.
