The bass player from Dire Straits (aka just plain "Dire") was on R4 promoting his Arrrt today. He has the wad and time to sit in his French chateaux, honing his talent to a fine point.
He comes from an established line of Rawk Stars that like to express themselves in the fine arts, after they have conquered music.
This thread is open for folks to add their favourite Art abominations , for the erudition of all lovers of "La Dauber"

Die Straits Bass bod: A study that took years to consider - of all the images of a Rock Life, John wanted to steer away from the corny or cliched, in his subject matter We all know that rock tours are hard work ... but below shows real dedication to duty. You have to practice day in-day out to get to this level of competence. It is unfortunate that a photo of the work does not allow us to appreciate the texture in this piece - it has areas of roughness that are totally original

You never know when the "accident in Art" is going to occur. For some, like Ronnie Wood of the Bones, it's not just an accident, it's a complete motorway pile-up. Inspired use of light and shade, I thought.

In later life, Ringo has waved goodbye to the heady days of the Beatles ...and moved into ...er...painting heads. His agent is confident that the cognoscenti will come to treasure his work. At time of press Mr. Cognoscenti was unavailable for comment.

That really IS truly ghastly.
Ringo seems such a down to earth bloke as well. Maybe it was during his 'Out of his head' period.
I quite like the guitar artwork - although its not exactly an inspired choice. Picasso liked painting guitars..its a nice shape.

The thing about the Ringo painting (and, believe me , there's more of them) is that it is totally transparent. The artist is really thick - to the point of stasis. Ringo has been looking at Dave Shrigley and possibly some Lichtenstein (he probably owns some) and then got it so completely wrong.
Just like Pizza and Stars, fine art can be read, you know. I predict Ringo is 97% earth and 3% water. If he were a Pizza, it would be just an uncooked base.
------------- Come on Art Lovers ... more examples of the these classics wanted.-------------
PS - thread title is "Rock around the load of old quock" - sod the replacements

I think the problem with Ringo is that he doesn't really have anything to do. He's sat around twiddling his thumbs because he does lots of creative things and he does possess an urge to express himself...its just that all his attempts are second rate..from acting, painting, writing, singing....how long have we got. ...and er..even drumming. However guess who was the wettest of the Beatles and who the least? ..bearing in mind that a surfeit of Water means revealing your vulnerability and being less defensive, self absorbed.

This is interesting...to moi anyway. It doesnt take much working out to find which of the R.Stones that is. ..probabably the most well balanced. Without any extreme element there is nothing to catch our eye. No fire...so not exactly the most dynamic creative force in the band. Again pretty fiery but less self absorbed/selfish (fire) than Jagger and with a smidgen of sensitivity (water).

Not bad..50% correct.
Lennon and Mc.Cartney are both pretty ruthless, guarded and unsympathetic.
George Harrison gets all the compassionate kudos.

Ah yes ... George...that's how it should be ( but what do I know)
----------
Wild Horses ....Mmm, this is the problem if you insist on painting from assembled photographs. You will end up being driven by photographic composition. Remember, photographic composition is often ruled by "balance on the thirds" but more importantly, photos are instantaneous - painting allows fot total alteration at any time...and they would be weird if the original composition held.
---------
Yes, marginal competence at drawing Charlie Watts ... but he is a familiar and repeated subject matter...and the formulaic execution shows that. No better than pavement artists, in essence. Obviously Wood had problems with the forshortened left arm... most people do...and has hidden the fact by some scrubby marks over the shirt forearm. If you look carefully you will notice they are both arbitrary and unecessary. The error is compounded by an over-strong line at the crease of fore/upper arm. Weirdly, there's some evidence of some love and tenderness for the subject...but the general pedestrian attitude to drawing kills that small spark.
Nice drum skin tightener, though - very nice touch

Nuvver one for ya. Courtesy of Mr Facelift himself. Macca. Old Macca is no slouch at marketing a shallow effort. Here he employs the tricky technique of "I've just doodled ...then I've scumbled the paint, so it looks professional now.." You could say the mock egyptian masks and landscape suggest hidden meaning and some sort of sub text. Or you could not

All I can think of is Easter Island and being violently sea sick (something to do with the atrocious colours).
Its probably a portrait of his lawyers because I was going to point out - but you beat me to it - that Rock Star painters tend to paint..er..other Rock Stars who then return the compliment by painting them.
Occasionally on or two have a leap of imagination and paint a guitar but they tend to stick to the ones that are the most financially rewarding familiar.

Well he's obviously unable to paint horses legs, and having been forced to look at his oeuvre its noticeable the heads are plentiful but legs absent.
Mind you Lowry used to stick..err stick people in front of his to hide the fact that he couldn't draw legs either - sadly Ronnie didn't think of that.
